Cujo by Stephen King Review

Time was a myth and death was a dream.

A family’s Saint Bernard who’s so loving and friendly contracts rabies and becomes Castle Rock’s most horrific nightmare since Frank Dodd.

I thoroughly enjoyed and loved Cujo. Though I love SK’s writing (and he’s not losing his spot as my favorite author), I felt that Cujo wasn’t as scary as previous works of SK’s that I’ve read because I really empathized with the pain that Cujo was in. And I wasn’t too scared until the rabies was really fully in effect and he was murderous. I’m a dog lover; I like dogs a lot more than I like some people to be completely honest with you. So every time I saw Cujo being in pain and being angry about the pain, I felt for him and I was like “aw of course you’re angry and don’t understand the pain you’re in” instead of “omg this dog would be so scary to be around.”

When I had finished 42% of the novel, I wasn’t that scared for the characters. But later when Cujo was on full kill mode, I was scared. On day 2 of being stuck in the car, I was SO scared for Donna and Tad. Since I went through this huge emotional change with Cujo, it’s obvious that King does a great job of making me empathize for a killer animal.

King is a genius – he put everything perfectly in place that Donna and Tad would be stuck in the car at the Cambers’ house until they either died or Cujo died and no one could rescue them. It was so intricate and perfect – but not overly so that I would’ve abandoned the book.

I love King’s writing – I’m not sure if there’s anything that I’ll read by him that I’ll hate, and I’ll always be so appreciative of my best friend who offered her copy of IT to read. And I’ve been hooked on SK ever since. (Which is also why I take any recs that she gives me over other people’s sometimes – if you’re reading this and you’ve given me a rec, please don’t take it personally if I haven’t read it yet. I just have so many books to read and I trust my best friend’s reading taste since some of it aligns so well with mine.)

A quick King read that’s definitely worth diving into when you have a spare few hours. And I say “hours” because you won’t want to put the book down.

Read on and don’t get stuck in a car when there’s a dog with rabies outside (jokes).
