Birdman by Mo Hayder – Thoughts and Review
Detective Inspector Jack Caffrey no longer (possibly had never) loves his girlfriend, is haunted by the childhood disappearance of his older brother, and meets a new case as a cluster of several bodies is found in London.

I really liked this book, and found a 1 star review afterward that hit some of the marks that I thought of but these points didn’t ruin the book for me. It was possible that these points gave me less of a horror feeling and more of a thriller vibe, but I still enjoyed it. I actually love (sometimes, except for books I love very strongly, i.e. Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins) looking at the lowest starred reviews because those reviewers sometimes pick out things they hated that I liked.
Spoilers below – for Birdman and books aside from Birdman
I thought the writing style and story style were kind of similar to Thomas Harris, so I kind of thought this was Red Dragon or Silence of the Lambs in the UK with a necrophiliac. More similar to Red Dragon, but more people know of SOTL. The BIGGEST similarity I got with Red Dragon was the want to consume art. Like, what is the thing with crime/mystery novelists writing about serial killers EATING ART?? I actually love this little detail and it’s so funny to me.
And I kind of loved the addition of Bliss (even though he was fucking atrocious) – when Harteveld died I freaked out and told my fiance, “there’s 100 pages left but the serial killer died so what the fuck is going to happen??” I was pretty excited. And Hayder did not disappoint – I was totally intrigued to finish 4 days before the date that I planned on finishing this.
This was pretty good, but honestly probably a one and done with this author.
