Rise the Dark by Michael Koryta – Review and Thoughts

In Florida, Markus Novak is trying to not think of his wife’s murder when her killer is released from prison. Across the country in Montana, the Baldwins’ night is disrupted when Jay, a barehand lineman, is called into overtime as the power goes out across town. These three individuals don’t know that their lives will change so fast and unexpectedly cross paths.
A mystery thriller about a cult planning to shut down the power grid in the US. This was a fun read to get into. Very easy to read to binge in a few days with short chapters and just enough depth for 385 pages.
The unique job that Jay has in this book is so cool – a barehand lineman works directly on the electrical wires that power your home and possibly job. My dad was a cable splicer (somewhat related to a lineman position) and has been teaching me more about electricity, so I kind of understood what was happening (but not that much because I’m really slow with learning in switching career paths and all).

I love reading fiction about cults – there’s so much drama that I just revel in and the psychology behind cults are just so interesting. I’m not sure how I’d do with a nonfiction book about any current cult(s), but I’m sure I’d still be interested in how they affect the members’ lives.
I’d probably read the first Markus Novak book that comes before this (oops), Last Words, if I ran across it at my library.
Read on.
