january 2024 wrapup

My Greatest Reading Month So Far

January of 2024 set a great precedent for my reading life. I read 8 books, which seems to be my average monthly amount. But the great aspect of this month was that I read 3,490 pages.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to read as much as this past month again. I may try a few times, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

I’m still on my nostalgic revisit to Hogwarts, a visit I used to take during winter break in high school (for all 4 years) that I’ve neglected in the years preceding since. I was so happy to have picked the series up again this winter. Not only have I been enjoying myself thoroughly and being reminded of events and details that were not present in the movies, I’ve also started to come up with homeschool lessons that pertain to studying HP but also specific literary skills that Rowling uses that I can show my children examples of.

During this month I traveled back to Hogwarts for years 3 through 5.

  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling

I took huge brain breaks and had fun with some very quick reading in No Exit by Taylor Adams and Winter Solstice by Elin Hilderbrand. Not to say that I didn’t think at all with these, but it was a little less thinking than the homeschool planning with HP and learning new things with my nonfiction. These two books were solely for personal leisure time and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I picked my nonfiction reads with a great deal of intention this month .

I read Picker’s Bible by Joe Willard to learn more about the antique world, which I am slowly integrating myself into. Woke Racism by John McWhorter was picked up for the book’s purpose; I looked at the author’s theory that the political left’s view of racism and wish to control everyone else is a religion in a sense. Which was kind of a wacky way to think of it, but it did make sense. Still Fucking Alive by Marissa Hardy broke my heart in more ways than one. But it also gave me hope, an admiration for the author, and an appreciation for her writing this book.

I’ll be going into February with these books

  • Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling

Happy February reading 🩶
